FREE Kit for Kids

FREE Kit for Kids

Our great supporters at Ryan’s SuperValu, Glanmire are now giving us the opportunity to earn some ‘kit for kids’ in White’s Cross GAA! When you shop in Ryan’s SuperValu Glanmire and spend more than €40 (worth 1 voucher) you can help White’s Cross GAA by putting the receipt voucher into the box in the store (the White’s Cross slot of course!). If 2000 vouchers are collected White’s Cross GAA will get an O’Neills juvenile kit – simple as!
If you have friends/relatives etc that are not tied to a club and do their shopping in Ryan’s Super Valu, Glanmire you might have a word encouraging them to drop the receipt into the White’s Cross slot. The offer runs until 13th of July, so let’s get shopping…!
Ryan’s SuperValu have been outstanding supporters of a number of sports clubs in the greater Glanmire area for a number of years now, including White’s Cross GAA Juvenile Club – we are hugely grateful to them for this ongoing support. This is yet another great initiative by them, as they give back to their local community.

White’s Cross 4-4 St. Vincents 1-2

In this under 12 hurling league encounter, buoyed on by a strong home support, White’s Cross captain Jack Collins elected to play against the elements in the first half. Stellar defending by Ethan Ryan, Seamus Hennessy, Daniel O’Keeffe & a dominant midfield of Eddie Coughlan & Robert Docherty ensured a steady supply of ball to the forwards throughout the opening period. Long range pointed frees from Eddie Coughlan and an opportunist goal from Luke Kelleher ensured the home team held a 1-2 to 0-2 lead at the break.
The second half saw White’s Cross play their best hurling of the season to date with Patrick Harrington, Charlie Browne, Eliah Hurley, Ciaran Aitken and Kevin Reynolds putting on impressive performances. Brendan Quain rattled the net within minutes of the restart to put them on their way. Eddie Coughlan notched the score of the night after a strong run, finishing superbly to the top corner and poacher supreme Sean O’Mahony did what he does best.
All in all, an extremely satisfying night for the management team with Luke Murphy, Ruairi Quinlan, Rian Harden all putting in solid performances to ensure a great victory.

White’s Cross 5-12 Laochra Og 2-5

In this Under 13 hurling league encounter, played at White’s Cross, our lads worked hard from the start. Harry Coughlan and Brendan Quain were hurling a lot of ball from midfield and scored some lovely points. Danny Linehan, Ethan Ryan and Olan Skillington were solid in defence, while Sean Twomey and Eolan Dill fought tigerishly for each ball and made sure their opponents had to work for everything. Seamus Hennessy was very solid in goal.
Robert Docherty and Luke Murphy were kept on their toes in the forward line trying to use every ball coming their way to the team’s advantage. Senan Ryan was a constant threat with his pace and skill, while Stephen Whooley and Daniel Kelleher got in on the scoring act to complete a fine team effort.
The introduction early in the second half of our young and upcoming U12’s Patrick Harrington, Luke Kelleher, Jack Collins and Ciaran Aitken showed how they were more than able to hold their own at this level. The substitutes settled well and contributed strongly as White’s Cross took control of the game and worked towards a well-deserved victory on a score line of 5-12 to 2-5.

Feile Peil na nOg

White’s Cross GAA has been given the huge honour of participating in the national Feile Peil na nOg this year, which will be held across Cork, Kerry & Limerick on the last weekend in June. This is a GAA-wide competition for Under 14 teams and will involve hundreds of clubs.

White’s Cross GAA is greatly looking forward to hosting a team from Hertfordshire in the UK, and we will also be paired with teams from Donoughmore and county Armagh in our group games. White’s Cross will play 3 group games on Friday evening & Saturday morning, and will then be on the road for cup/shield quarter finals on the Saturday afternoon. Semi-finals and finals will be on the Sunday. There will be a parade for all teams in our area in Carrigaline on the Saturday night.  Hertfordshire will arrive to White’s Cross late on Thursday June 23rd and will depart again on Sunday 26th.

This will be a great occasion for the whole club – the last time White’s Cross were involved in hosting a team in the national Féile competition was way back in 1986, when the Askeaton club in Limerick came to the Cross! It is a really special occasion for the youngsters involved – here’s hoping that the boys who travel over from Hertfordshire will have memories of their weekend spent in White’s Cross, that they will treasure forever after!  Equally we hope that our own Under 14 squad will really enjoy the Féile experience.

Under 12 Team Making History

The current crop of White’s Cross Under 12 footballers had the proud honour recently of being the first team ever to represent the club on the hallowed turf of Croke Park. A big ‘míle buíochas’ to County Games Manager Kevin O Callaghan and East Cork GDA Sean Crowley for presenting this opportunity to our Club and these young players –they won’t ever forget this day and hopefully it won’t be the last time some of them get to play in Croker!
It was a truly brilliant day in Croke Park for the squad and included a stadium tour, museum tour and three great matches against Clashmore / Kinsalebeg (Waterford), Moyvane (Kerry) and Monaleen (Limerick). Each of the games proved to be very competitive encounters and while no scores were formally kept, the word on the bus on the journey home was the Cross had one win, one draw and one loss – another Cork football side to lose out to the green and gold across the county bounds down west!
Well done to these youngsters who as always represented our Club in exemplary fashion on the biggest GAA stage of them all! Thanks to the coaches Pat Casey and Denis Harrington who do great work with this team. Thanks to Ronan Quain for travelling up to act as our referee on the day, and others that also assisted on the day. Finally míle buíochas to Michelle Whooley for all of the work she does around the organisation of this team, including organising all the fine details around this trip of a life-time for these youngsters.

Second Pitch Proving a Vital Resource

White’s Cross GAA finds itself in the hugely fortunate position of having secured in recent years the use of additional ground adjacent to our grounds in Ballinvriskig.  This field has been developed into a juvenile pitch and naturally it is great to have it bordering our main field – many clubs have to travel distances of a mile and more to get to their second field.  While the poor weather up until April has prevented us from using these pitches as we would have hoped, nonetheless there have been various nights where the place has been bursting at the seams with activity!  We report on a couple of such nights here.

One particular Friday evening had our second junior football team see off the challenge of neighbours Brian Dillons on a 2.12 to 1.2 score-line on the main pitch. Over on the second pitch at the same time our under 10 team also had a derby clash as they played Carraig na bhFear in a couple of blitz style games – one in each code. Both the football and hurling clashes were very competitive encounters – young lads who are the best score keepers claim it was a home win in the football and an away win in the hurling! Meantime, while all of these matches were going on, over on the astro turf, over 60 boys and girls representing the under 6 and 8 teams were being put through their paces.  When you add in a tidy squad of under 13 footballers that were also training, it did all mean the place was buzzing…!

There was another double header at White’s Cross GAA Grounds later in the month with both the Junior hurlers and u14 footballers winning. Following on from the success of the Minor Footballers who defeated Glanmire the previous evening by 2.10 to 1.12 it was a fruitful 24 hours for White’s Cross GAA!  In the County Hurling League the Junior hurlers defeated Blarney 2.13 to 1.13 in a good, sporting encounter, while on our second pitch the under 14 side had a much more convincing victory over Castlelyons.  Conal Smith and Padraig Murnane picked off some tidy scores from their berths in the full-forward line in the junior encounter, while further back the field James Cooney rifled over some big scores from distance.  Catching the eye in this encounter also was Cillian Hall who, in his first year playing adult hurling, has embedded himself into the squad very nicely.

The under 14 lads were up for their game from the start with Jacob Hurley and Conor Docherty dominant from midfield. Scores were picked off clinically, including a hat trick of goals in the first half from the irrepressible Jack O’ Callaghan. Tom Casey and David O Connell were very prominent all through, while others to catch the eye included Ethan Ryan and Patrick Harrington. However everyone played their part and it was the strong team play that yielded the win on a final score-line of White’s Cross 4-12 Castlelyons 2-4.
