Some Under-Age Snippets

Our 4,5,6,7 & 8 year olds played a series of football matches against Carraig na bhFear recenlty. Special mention must go to our under 5 and 6 year old boys and girls who played their first game of football of the season – for most it was their first game ever! There was plenty excitement in the matches and end to end action, with family members on the side-line enjoying the endeavour of their young ones. They might not be the finished article just yet but they are certainly willing…! Thanks to Carraig na bhFear for travelling down to us this evening and we look forward to returning the visit sometime soon.

The 20 under 8 footballers that played in the Rebel Og Monster Blitz hosted by St Vincents, put in some really stirring performances in their blitz games – their parents, family members and coaches watching must have been very proud! The panel was divided into 2 teams for the blitz style games with Grenagh, Shamrocks, Delaneys and St. Nicks amongst the opponents. We are glad to report that our youngsters battled bravely and with great energy in each and every encounter – and a fair bit of skill thrown in for fine measure. Thanks to St Vincents for hosting and Rebel Og for organising.

Our Under 10 team has also been out and about playing games during June also – one such game was a hurling game away to Carraig na bhFear, which saw the game preceded by the two teams parading around the field behind a piper.  This age-group is also preparing to play a new league in the coming weeks.

Equally our 8 and under 10 girls teams have been busy playing camogie games in recent weeks – Brian Dillons, Nemo Rangers, Ballygarvan and Passage have been some of the teams that we have played across these two age-groups in the past month.

This is just a wee flavour of a small amount of the recent activity for our youngest teams at White’s Cross GAA – other than the under 16 and 18 teams, whose competitions take a break to facilitate the Junior and Leaving Certificate, all our teams have been busy in action.

JBFC White’s Cross 3-11 Bishopstown 2-9

Well done to all involved in this win in what was a most entertaining game of football in the City Division Junior B Football Round 2 clash played at Ballinlough. White’s Cross started strongly with a few early points but were rocked by an early Bishopstown goal. However a fine surging run from Billy O Hara saw him score a great individual goal 20 minutes in and this gave the Cross the momentum again. At half time we led by two points 1-8 to 1-6 with some fine point taking from both sides being a real feature of this encounter -scores from Dylan Burke and Don O Connell were the pick of the crop for the Cross.
When Shane Cahill pounced for an early second half goal, after good work from Joe Cashman, this really put White’s Cross in the driving seat as we led by 7 points. However the Town weren’t going to lie down and only for some sterling defence work from Eoin Whooley, Padraig Murnane and Derek O Connor this lead would have been much slimmer. The Town did finally get in for a goal and they smelled blood momentarily only to be rocked by a superb Bryan O Sullivan equivalent immediately from the kick-out. For the remaining 15 minutes Kevin Buckley marshalled matters from his centre back berth to ensure Bishopstown had to work really hard to get through to Dave Buckley’s goal but even then, Dave and his defence were up to the task and White’s Cross held on for a well merited win.
Team: Dave Buckley, Padraig Murnane, Derek O Connor, Eoin Whooley, Fearghal Reid, Kevin Buckley, Sean Twomey, Dylan Burke, Robert McElhinney, Shane Twomey, Bryan O Sullivan, Billy O Hara, Don O Connell, Shane Cahill, Michéal Brosnan. Subs: Joe Cashman for Sean Twomey (24 mins.), Conor Kelleher for Brosnan (30 mins.), James Royal for Shane Twomey (48 mins.), Sean C Burke, Paul O Donovan, Derek Royal & Seamas Reid.
